How We Choose the Best Park
All three parks share the same elephant population — the herds migrate between them depending on water levels and weather. On the morning of your safari, your experienced driver will assess current conditions and take you to whichever park has the best elephant activity that day. You can also request a specific park when booking.

What Happens When
Safari Itinerary
Your private open-roof 4WD jeep collects you directly from your hotel in Sigiriya, Habarana, or nearby areas. The morning slot departs at 5:30 AM for the best wildlife activity at dawn; the afternoon slot departs at 1:00 PM to catch the famous Elephant Gathering in the golden afternoon light. Please mention your preferred time slot when booking.
Arriving at the Minneriya National Park gate, your tracker (Premium & All-Inclusive packages) handles the entry formalities. You will sign the visitor register, receive your park permit, and brief on the safety guidelines before entering the protected area in your jeep.
Weave through the dry mixed evergreen forest and open grasslands as your expert tracker scans the terrain. Watch for sloth bears foraging in rocky outcrops, herds of sambar deer, wild buffalo grazing near the lake edge, and crocodiles basking on the banks. Your tracker will stop the jeep at the right moments for photography without disturbing the animals.
The jeep emerges from the forest onto the open shores of the Minneriya Tank — and there they are. Dozens, sometimes hundreds, of wild Asian elephants bathing, playing, nursing calves, and socialising along the water's edge. The afternoon session offers the most dramatic light for photography as the sun dips toward the horizon, painting the sky gold while elephant silhouettes move through the water.
After the safari your jeep drives you back to your hotel. The morning session typically returns by 10:00–11:00 AM; the afternoon session returns by 6:00–6:30 PM. All-Inclusive guests enjoy a refreshment stop on the way back. Your driver is happy to suggest nearby restaurants for dinner if you'd like recommendations.

The gathering peaks between July and October, with August and September being the most spectacular months. Up to 200–300 elephants congregate around the Minneriya Tank during this period. Sightings are still excellent year-round.
The jeep safari inside Minneriya National Park lasts approximately 3–4 hours. Including hotel pick-up and drop-off from Sigiriya or Habarana, the total experience is around 4–5 hours.
The afternoon safari departs from your hotel at 1:00 PM and returns by approximately 6:00–6:30 PM. This slot is most popular for elephant sightings as the animals come to the lake as the temperature drops in the late afternoon. The morning safari departs at 5:30 AM for early wildlife activity.
Absolutely. The jeep safari is a wonderful experience for children. We recommend bringing sunscreen, hats, and light long sleeves. Children under 5 travel free. Please let us know the ages of any children when booking.
Elephant sightings are extremely common at Minneriya, especially during the afternoon slot near the tank. However, wildlife is wild and unpredictable — sightings cannot be 100% guaranteed, but our experienced trackers know the park extremely well and maximise your chances.
