About This Safari
Overview
When the sun sets over Sigiriya, a completely different world awakens. The forests and scrublands that surround the ancient rock come alive with creatures rarely seen by day — and this private 4-hour night safari is your chance to meet them. Travelling by off-road jeep with an expert nocturnal-wildlife guide, you'll venture along quiet forest tracks in search of some of Sri Lanka's most elusive animals.
The star of the night is the wide-eyed grey slender loris, a small, slow-moving primate that is almost impossible to find without a trained eye. Beyond the loris, the darkness may reveal fishing cats, the extraordinarily rare rusty-spotted cat — the smallest wild cat on Earth — jungle cats, wild elephants moving through the scrub, and a chorus of owls, nightjars and other creatures of the night. Every safari is different, and that unpredictability is exactly what makes it unforgettable.

How the Night Unfolds
Your guide collects you from your hotel around Sigiriya just after sunset, when nocturnal wildlife begins to stir. Guests in Habarana, Dambulla or Kandalama are picked up too (small surcharge). The exact time shifts with the season and sunset.
Leaving the main roads behind, your 4WD jeep heads onto quiet forest tracks. As your eyes adjust to the dark and the sounds of the night forest surround you, the search for wildlife begins.
Using careful spotlighting that respects the animals, your guide scans the trees and undergrowth for the tell-tale eye-shine of the slender loris, fishing cats and other creatures. There is no rushing — the team takes time at every sighting so you can truly appreciate each animal.
Depending on the night, you may encounter the rare rusty-spotted cat, jungle cats, wild elephants moving through the scrub, civets, mouse deer, owls and nightjars. Every safari brings a different mix of wildlife.
