Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most iconic wildlife destination — a vast protected wilderness of 979 km² in the deep south of the island, where the dry scrub forest meets the Indian Ocean shoreline. It holds the world's highest density of wild leopards per square kilometre, making it the best place on earth to observe these extraordinary cats in their natural habitat.
Your private open-roof 4WD jeep enters Yala at dawn or dusk — the prime wildlife hours — with an expert naturalist guide at the wheel who has spent years learning Yala's resident leopard family territories. What Happens
Safari Itinerary
Your private jeep picks you up from your hotel in Colombo, Mirissa, Galle, Tissamaharama or your chosen location before sunrise. Guests from Tissamaharama meet their jeep directly at the park gate.
Your naturalist guide leads you through the park entry formalities. From the very first metres inside Block 1, eyes scan the dry scrub for movement — a leopard tail in a tree, the flick of an elephant ear, the glint of a crocodile eye at a lagoon edge.
The heart of your Yala experience. The cool morning hours are prime wildlife time. Your guide navigates the network of sandy tracks, reading fresh tracks, listening for alarm calls from deer and monitoring known leopard territories. Every waterhole, rocky outcrop and open grassland holds the promise of an extraordinary encounter.
A short detour inside the park to the ancient Sithulpawwa Buddhist rock monastery, believed to have been inhabited by 12,000 monks in the 2nd century BC. The view over the surrounding jungle from the summit rock is extraordinary.
All-Inclusive guests enjoy a gourmet packed bush lunch in a scenic spot inside or near the park boundary. Premium and Standard guests can arrange a local meal in Tissamaharama.
Your driver takes you on the scenic coastal road back to your hotel, passing through the Hambantota coast. Estimated arrival back at your Colombo hotel around 7:00–8:00 PM (Mirissa and Galle guests arrive earlier).

Yes — Yala National Park has the world's highest recorded density of wild leopards per square kilometre. Block 1, where visitor safaris take place, has an excellent leopard sighting rate. Dawn and dusk drives offer the best chances. Our expert naturalist guides know the resident leopard family territories and greatly improve your likelihood of a sighting.
February to July is peak season during the dry season, when shrinking waterholes concentrate wildlife. Leopard and elephant sightings are at their highest. Yala closes annually in September for approximately 6 weeks for conservation. Year-round safaris are available outside the closure.
Yala is approximately 290 km from Colombo — about 4.5 to 5 hours by private vehicle. Guests staying in Mirissa, Galle or Tissamaharama have a much shorter transfer of 30–90 minutes. We recommend staying in the south to maximize time inside the park.
The game drive inside the park typically lasts 3 to 4 hours. A morning safari starts at park opening (6:00 AM) and ends around 10:00–11:00 AM. An evening safari runs from 3:00 PM to closing at 6:00 PM. We recommend dawn entry for the best leopard sightings.
Yes — Yala is suitable for children of all ages. The 4WD jeep safari is comfortable and safe. Children love spotting wildlife and the experience is genuinely exciting for young visitors. We simply ask that noise levels are kept low inside the park to avoid disturbing the animals.
